Smartphone News

What is Boot to Gecko?

Boot to Gecko is an Open Source mobile operating systems which adhers to the web standards and uses Web technologies. As you can see in the demo above, tasks like maing a call can be easily performed using web technologies.

Is it Android?

Boot to Gecko does use some of the same low-level building blocks used in Android (Linux kernel, libusb, etc) in order to reduce the burden on ODMs/OEMs to bring up B2G on new hardware. However, B2G is not based on Android, and will not be compatible with the Android stack.

Can I buy Boot to Gecko phone?

During Mobile World Congress Telefónica announced that they will be using Boot to Gecko in their devices. The company said, “Mozilla’s Boot to Gecko Project unlocks the current limitations of Web development for mobile by providing new features and APIs that will demonstrate just how powerful HTML5 can be and that it is possible to run an entire device using this technology. In doing so it is possible to remove much of the middleware and other superfluous software on a device which not only makes the applications run faster, but also brings down the device unit cost.”

Apps

Mozilla also announced its app store called Mozilla Market place where developers can submit their apps. Since these apps use web technologies they can run on Boot to Gecko, desktops and Android phones.

After the web browser and email client, Mozilla is all set to disrupt the smartphone segments. With Android and iOS controlling the market and Microsoft’s Windows struggling at the bottom. Mozilla’s Boot to Gecko, with its open web technologies, will make it even harder for Microsoft’s proprietary Windows Phone to survive in this highly competitive market. Nokia, you just committed suicide.
